Iceland’s rocket ice lolly reaches new heights – literally!
It’s friday, it’s sunny and we have some fun news in from Iceland this afternoon.
Iceland has made childhood dreams come true by sending a rocket ice lolly into space to celebrate the start of the summer holidays.
The iconic rocket lolly, crowned the UK’s favourite ice lolly in a survey by Iceland Foods, blasted off from the company’s head office and embarked on an epic 175km journey to the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere.

As schools across the UK closed for summer, the beloved lolly took off, 62 years after first delighting kids from ice cream vans. This historic flight marked the rocket lolly as the first ice lolly to reach the stratosphere!
Iceland launched the mission after discovering that 78% of people confessed they used to pretend their rocket lolly was a real rocket, running around and shouting ‘blast off’ before finally eating it.
Richard Walker, Executive Chairman of Iceland Foods, said: “IT FINALLY HAPPENED! The rocket lolly achieved what children have imagined for decades; it went on a mission to the edge of space.
“What better way to kick off the summer holidays than by sending a rocket lolly into the stratosphere? Here’s to many more rocket lollies being enjoyed all summer long.”
The lolly took off from Iceland’s Deeside head office at 9.45am on 27th June, soaring to an impressive height of 574,000 ft. A camera captured the rocket in its natural habitat, with the stunning curvature of the Earth visible in the background.
The lolly made a speedy return to Earth, plummeting at 200mph before safely landing on British soil. Mission accomplished!
Further research from Iceland Foods revealed that half of adults (50%) believe ice lollies aren’t just for kids, and 1 in 10 (12%) wish they could enjoy them all year round, not just in hot weather.
The iconic rocket lolly is available in Iceland stores and online, alongside other favourites that also made it to the top five most iconic lollies list.
