Greggs hits 2,500 store milestone
Food-on-the-go retailer Greggs has reached a significant milestone in its estate expansion strategy with the opening of its 2,500th UK shop in Sainsbury’s Bridgeway in Cobham.
Situated on a petrol forecourt, the new site is Greggs’ eighth store opened with Sainsbury’s and brings its total number of shops launched with supermarket partners to 50.
Rhian Bartlett, chief food commercial officer at Sainsbury’s said: “We’re delighted to have opened our eighth shop with Greggs at our Cobham store. It follows the successful launches of Greggs café-style formats at other Sainsbury’s locations, which have already proved popular with our customers.”
Launched in 2021, Greggs’ five-year growth plan includes a long-term target of having more than 3,000 shops in the UK. This includes plans to open between 140 and 160 new shops in 2024, mainly in travel hubs and roadside locations.
Last year, Greggs accelerated its shop opening programme with 220 gross shop launches and 145 net new shops.
Tony Rowson, property director at Greggs, said: “We’re proud to have hit this milestone and opened our 2,500th shop in a location which demonstrates the breadth of our estate and the popularity of our brand.
“We are grateful for the hard work of our teams and the support of our valued partners as we continue to expand towards our vision of significantly more than 3,000 Greggs shops longer term.”
