Schuh resumes online trading

Footwear retailer Schuh has taken the decision to reopen its website following the introduction of new measures to protect staff throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Schuh said the decision was critical to the preservation of its business throughout the crisis.

The retailer will also introduce a staggered reopening of its fulfilment operation.

After completing a formal risk assessment as part of a health and safety check, Schuh has introduced new measures such as having only ten staff or less on site at any one time, two metre spacing between all staff, and site sanitisation cleaning throughout the day. Staff will also be provided with workstation sanitisation cleaning kits and hand sanitiser stations.

Schuh said the affected employees have indicated their willingness to return to work to support the website but will also have the option to remain at home and continue to be paid for the interim. Over 90% of employees have been furloughed with government support.

Colin Temple, Schuh chief executive, said: “The decision to reopen our website is critical to preserve our business and is based upon government guidelines, which have also been endorsed by the Retail Consortium. Schuh has gone above and beyond to comply with government health and safety hygiene practice and deliver extensive welfare procedures within our fulfilment operation. We have been overwhelmed by positivity from our schuh community and we reopen with the continued goodwill and support of our schuh employees. We want to work together to support our business throughout this crisis.”
