River Island eyes longterm US growth

River Island is eyeing growth in the US, including the opening of a physical store, after seeing strong online sales in the country.

The company said trading has been particularly strong in places like California, Florida, Texas and New York.

River Island chief executive Will Kernan told The Mail on Sunday that US sales are several times bigger than in 2019.

He said: “We see it as a major growth opportunity. Even though the brand is not well known in certain parts of the US, what’s interesting is that the product is resonating strongly.”

Kernan said the plans for growth were long term and that the company would need to “develop the brand and understand the market” more before launching a store.
