Oliver Bonas recognised as Future Leaders in EDI at People in Retail Awards
Oliver Bonas, the independent British lifestyle brand known for its unique designs in fashion and homeware, has been awarded the Future Leaders title at the People in Retail Awards 2024. Although they didn’t secure the JEDI Award, their efforts in the field of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) have not gone unnoticed.
The business, led by Senior EDI Manager Christopher Shearer-Wright, has made significant strides over the past few years, and the recognition highlights their ongoing dedication to building a more inclusive and equitable workplace.
Since making EDI a key focus in 2020, Oliver Bonas has shifted from a model of equality to one of equity, ensuring that opportunities and resources are adapted to meet the unique needs of each individual. Their initiatives, such as the launch of an Inclusion Calendar, which shines a spotlight on diverse religious and cultural events, and the creation of the Voices Network—a group of employee-led resource groups—exemplify their innovative approach to inclusivity. Their forward-thinking policies on menopause, disability, and religion further demonstrate their commitment to equity.
Key partnerships with organisations like Black Business Residency and Mosaic LGBT+ Young Persons Trust showcase Oliver Bonas’ determination to not only promote inclusivity within their own walls but also to drive meaningful change in society.
Christopher Shearer-Wright expressed his excitement at the recognition:
“Being included in a category with such esteemed brands was a win in itself, so being dubbed a ‘Future Leader’ is a real honour. I am very proud of the work we do and what we have achieved so far – being recognised for this is truly the cherry on top of the cake”.
Natalie, Chief Happiness Officer for PIRA, praised their journey: “Oliver Bonas exemplifies how powerful small, thoughtful changes can be, and we look forward to seeing their continued impact in the retail world.“
With continued innovation and a clear vision for a more inclusive future, Oliver Bonas is setting an example for other retailers on how to embrace equity in their business operations.
Christopher Shearer-Wright will be speaking at The Retail Bulletin HR Summit in London on 9 October, joining a panel with Selfridges and IKEA to discuss building diverse, inclusive workplaces.
