Meg Lustman Honoured with Spirit of Excellence Award

The People in Retail Awards 2024 recognised Meg Lustman for her exceptional contributions to the retail industry, awarding her the Spirit of Excellence Award.

With a career spanning over 35 years, Meg has not only driven successful business transformations but has also served as a mentor, advocate, and champion for countless individuals across the industry.

A journey marked by leadership and compassion

Meg began her career in the fashion and retail sector from humble beginnings, rising to become one of the most respected leaders in the industry. She is known for her genuine empathy, collaborative spirit, and dedication to nurturing talent. As CEO of Hobbs, Meg didn’t just focus on financial success; she prioritised creating an environment where employees felt valued, empowered, and supported. Under her leadership, Hobbs thrived not just in profitability but also in fostering creativity, diversity, and well-being.

A true advocate for diversity and inclusion

Meg’s dedication to diversity and inclusion goes far beyond corporate responsibilities. She has been a relentless advocate for equity in the industry, mentoring countless women and underrepresented individuals, and using her platform to amplify diverse voices. Her commitment is evident in her role as Chair of St. Luke’s Hospice (Harrow and Brent), where she champions initiatives that promote equal opportunities and foster a sense of belonging.

Leading with wisdom and mentorship

One of the standout aspects of Meg’s career is her commitment to mentorship. Her personalised approach has guided many aspiring leaders, offering them a safe space to explore their potential and overcome obstacles. In her advisory roles, Meg continues to share her expertise, having mentored and advised numerous CEOs and boards in the retail sector.

Her former colleagues and peers speak highly of her influence. Sarah Welsh, CEO of N Brown, praised Meg as “an incredible supporter and champion of women,” while Hash Hadha, CEO of Jigsaw, described her as “an amazing person who has been a true mentor, colleague, and dear friend for almost 15 years now”.

A trailblazer in strategic transformation

Beyond her work at Hobbs, Meg has played pivotal roles in leading strategic transformations across numerous retail organisations. Her experience includes steering the Mosaic/Aurora Group as Group Chief Strategy Officer and MD, driving growth, diversification, and global dominance across nine brands in over 40 countries. Her innovative approach made her a pioneer in adopting eCommerce and digital solutions long before it became mainstream, making her a true trailblazer in the sector.

Championing retail’s human side

Meg’s unique leadership style is characterised by her deep empathy and genuine interest in others. Meg is known for prioritising her team’s growth and well-being over her own recognition. As Liz Jewitt Cross told the TRB and Judging team “Meg is a “retail rock star” who leads with humility, respect, and an unwavering dedication to others”.

Meg Lustman’s recognition as the Spirit of Excellence Award winner is a testament to her enduring impact, not just in shaping successful retail businesses but in nurturing a culture of kindness, inclusion, and genuine care for people. Her influence is far-reaching, and she stands as a true beacon of excellence in the retail industry.
