Matalan appoints chief trading officer
Matalan has appointed Ben Smith to the newly created role of chief trading officer.
Smith joined the fashion retailer in March as interim buying and merchandising director following 25 years in the value retail sector. His career has included stints as trading director at Pep&Co and several senior trading roles at Primark where he worked from 2011 to 2021. Prior to that, Smith was head of buying for menswear at Peacocks.
According to Retail Week, Smith will report directly to the company’s chief executive Jo Whitfeld.
Whitfield said: “Ben’s extensive and proven track record within retail and executive trading roles will benefit Matalan as we enter our next phase of growth with confidence. This new senior position will enable our focus on strengthening our commercial proposition and offering the great quality and value that our customers trust us for at Matalan.”
