GU to open first store in US
Japanese fashion retailer GU is to open its first physical store in the US this autumn.
Part of Fast Retailing Group, the company was established in 2006 as a sister brand of Uniqlo and now has a presence in 450 locations.
The pop-up shop in New York will be the company’s first physical store outside of the Asia region. It will offer a range of on-trend clothing and accessories for both men and women.
Osamu Yunoki, chief executive of GU Co said: “It is a great honour to be opening our first store in the United States. New York is a place where people with diverse backgrounds come together from around the world, an exciting city where fashion, art, music, and other varied cultural elements intersect. By opening a pop-up shop in the centre of Soho, we will be able to reach a wide range of customers, including New York residents as well as tourists.”
The brand name GU is close in sound to the Japanese word jiyu which means freedom.
