Commentary: Primark’s ‘Bring the Joy’ campaign shines bright this Christmas

As the festive season unfolds, it’s the perfect time to shine a light on the good news and inspiring acts of kindness happening around us.

One such initiative that deserves recognition is Primark’s heartwarming ‘Bring the Joy’ campaign. Over the weekend, I ventured into Primark in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Yes, it was the weekend before Christmas … a daring feat, but what I experienced made it well worth it.

The spirit of giving

Despite the bustling crowds, the store was impeccably organised. Shelves and rails were neat, and staff were readily available, ensuring a seamless shopping experience. But what truly struck me wasn’t the efficiency – it was the spirit of giving that greeted me at the entrance. A large Christmas tree adorned with tags stood front and centre, along with posters promoting the ‘Bring the Joy’ initiative. This campaign is a celebration of community and generosity, inviting customers to make a difference while they shop.

Supporting Tyisha Positive Action Group
Here’s how it works: Each tag on the tree represents a person in the community, detailing their age and, in some cases, their Christmas wish. Shoppers can pick a tag, select a gift from the store, and pay for it at the till. The staff then carefully prepare the gift for donation to a chosen charity. In Llanelli, the beneficiary is the Tyisha Positive Action Group,  a grassroots organisation dedicated to uplifting the local community through various impactful initiatives. From providing emergency food parcels to organising litter-picking events, they embody the very essence of community spirit.

As both a news editor and the Chief Happiness Officer for the People in Retail, I advocate for those doing extraordinary things. I champion retail as a career and firmly believe that, above all, success in retail hinges on people. This story encapsulates all of that. The staff in the Llanelli store are not only excelling in their roles but also thinking about their community. It’s a true win-win, and that’s why I love it.

Rafal Dymek, Store Manager at Primark Llanelli, expressed his pride in supporting the group:

“We’re really proud to be supporting Tyisha Positive Action Group during the festive season as we know the great work they do very well. This year we’ve combined local customer and Primark donations to gift over £1,200 worth of Primark items, including much-needed essentials and Christmas basics, to be distributed to children, families and the elderly.

It’s been fantastic for our store to be playing a part in Primark’s nationwide charity campaign to ‘Bring the Joy’ this Christmas, and I am grateful to my entire team for ensuring we have given back to the Llanelli community where they need us most.”

Primark’s ‘Bring the Joy’ campaign extends far beyond Llanelli. Across all participating stores, the retailer is donating £250,000 worth of Christmas gift packs, partnering with local charities to spread joy and goodwill. Customers are also invited to join in by purchasing and donating their own gift packs, amplifying the campaign’s reach and impact.

A Primark spokesperson aptly summed up the initiative: “Primark is all about making people look and feel good for less, and there is no more important time for this than at Christmas. It really is the most wonderful time of the year, which is never about how much you spend, but the small things, acts of kindness, the smile that a thoughtful present can bring and all the reunions and gatherings that come with this time of year.”

Good news throughout the year

This spirit of giving has been a recurring theme for Primark throughout the year. In July, they announced a price freeze on hundreds of back-to-school items, alleviating financial pressure on families. They also introduced an inclusive range of adaptive fashion, designed in collaboration with disability advocate Victoria Jenkins, to make stylish and practical clothing accessible to all. Additionally, a September charity fashion show at their Waterford store raised over €3,000 for Down Syndrome Waterford & South Kilkenny, underscoring their commitment to community engagement.

A Christmas worth celebrating

Primark’s ‘Bring the Joy’ campaign is more than a festive gesture,  it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. As we celebrate this holiday season, let’s just appreciate special initiatives like these that remind us of the true spirit of Christmas: giving, sharing, and uplifting each other. Bravo, Primark, for making a meaningful difference in our communities.
