Clarks closes UK factory
Footwear retailer Clarks is closing its UK factory in Somerset’s Street in a move that will lead to the loss of 35 jobs.
The news follows Clarks’ announcement in January that it would be commencing a 30 day consultation period after the factory failed to meet its targets.
While ten of the factory’s staff members have been redeployed elsewhere in the Clarks business, 35 employees will be leaving the company.
The factory opened two years ago as Clarks looked to return to more local production. It was aiming to produce 300,000 pairs of desert boots a year at the facility.
In a statement, Clarks said: “Despite our best efforts, the levels of production and cost targets we hoped for could not be reached in the short to medim term and following a period of consultation, the proposal has been accepted and the factory will close.”
