Christopher Bailey to leave Burberry

Luxury brand Burberry has announced that Christopher Bailey will leave the company at the end of 2018.

In a statement, Burberry said the president and chief creative officer had decided to pursue new creative projects after 17 years with the business.

In 2014 Bailey took on the dual role of chief executive and chief creative officer but in July, Marco Gobbetti was appointed as chief executive.

Bailey will remain in his role until 31 March when he will step down from the board but will continue to provide support to Gobbetti until 31 December 2018.

Sir John Peace, Burberry chairman, said: “Christopher is a unique talent and an exceptional person and I would like to thank him personally for his part in transforming Burberry.”

In his time with the business, Bailey has been a driving force behind Burberry’s transformation from a small licensed outerwear business to one of the world’s largest global luxury brands.

Gobbetti said: “Burberry has undergone an incredible transformation since 2001 and Christopher has been instrumental to the company’s success in that period. While I am sad not to have the opportunity to partner with him for longer, the legacy he leaves and the exceptional talent we have at Burberry give me enormous confidence in our future.”
