Amazon to create 2,500 jobs in UK

Amazon is to create 2,500 permanent jobs in the UK in 2018 to take the total UK workforce to 27,500 by the end of the year.

The company said roles will include those for software developers, engineers and technicians as well as entry-level positions and on-the-job training opportunities.

The new jobs reflect the online retailer’s investment in UK research and development as well as the expansion of products and services such as Amazon Fresh, Amazon Business, Amazon Fashion, Prime Now, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Echo and Amazon Web Services.

The company has invested over £9.3 billion in its UK operations since 2010.

Doug Gurr, Amazon UK country manager, said: “The UK is a fantastic place to do business so we are delighted to continue our investment in the British economy and provide quality, permanent roles for people the length and breadth of the country. Whether you are looking for an entry-level role or in highly-specialised fields such as speech science or machine learning, we are proud to be expanding our UK workforce so we can further improve our products and services like Amazon Fresh, Prime Video and Amazon Alexa.”

Amazon will create 650 permanent roles at its development centres and in Amazon Web Services, in addition to hundreds of new head office roles.

The company is looking to appoint people in its head office and fashion photography studio in London, its development centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London, its customer service centre in Edinburgh, and within Amazon Web Services. In addition, there will be new jobs in its delivery stations across the country and 16 fulfilment centres, including new sites in Coventry and Bolton.

This year Amazon will also hire graduates and interns in a variety of technical, non-technical and operations roles as well as recruit a further 170 apprentices in fulfilment centres across the UK with opportunities in operations, engineering and facilities.

Chancellor, the Rt Hon. Philip Hammond MP, said: “Supporting businesses to create the high-quality jobs of the future is a key part of our plan to create an economy that works for everyone.

“Innovative companies, such as Amazon, will be at the forefront of our new economy. And I welcome the news that they are creating 2,500 permanent, new jobs across the country. It’s a clear vote of confidence in our workforce and our economy.”
