Sales at John Lewis down 1.8% last week

John Lewis saw its sales edge down 1.8% year-on-year last week due to annualising of strong price match promotions in the same week last year.

Home sales were down 7.2% on the corresponding week last year although the outdoor living category put in a good performance with sales up 10.9%.

Electrical and home technology sales rose by 1.1% as sales of mobile phones continued to grow. This was partly due to last week’s launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile phone. The vision category also had a strong week with sales up 9.7%.

Fashion sales were up 0.5% boosted by a 4.1% increase in sales of beauty, wellbeing and leisure products. Sales of clothing items were impacted by the colder weather but womenswear sales grew by 2.6% with casualwear the best performing category.
