John Lewis sales up 8.9% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 8.9% year-on-year last week to £79.8 million as it benefited from particularly strong online traffic.

Fashion sales rose by 15.5% after the retailer achieved a 34.5% uplift in womenswear sales. Its denim lifestyle brand AND/OR was a stand-out performer. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure also had a good week with sales up 13.4%.

Home sales climbed by 11% as the textiles and home accessories category saw sales growth of 16.3%. Furniture and flooring also performed well with an uplift of 8.4%.

Electricals and home technology sales edged up 2.1%. Tablets and computers enjoyed a particularly strong week with sales up 23% driven by sales of the MacBook Air and 10 inch iPads. Sales within the vision category also saw double digit growth as trade was boosted by the launch of the new Samsung chrome TV.
