John Lewis sales up 6.5% last week

John Lewis saw its total sales increase by 6.5% year-on-year last week to £87.3 million.

Fashion sales climbed by 8.6% as trade was driven by strong sales of cold weather clothing in womenswear. The menswear and women’s accessories categories also performed well.

Home sales edged up 0.6% following a 3.2% rise in the gift and cook and dine category. John Lewis said customers continued to purchase “back to uni” items and began to look ahead to Halloween and Christmas. Meanwhile, lighting sales rose by 5.4%.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 11.1% driven by strong mobile sales due to an Apple launch. The accessories category also had a good week helped by the launch of own-brand phone cases.
