John Lewis sales up 6.2% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain rose by 6.2% year-on-year to £83.8 million last week.

Fashion sales had a strong week as a 12.8% increase was driven by the price matching of a competitor’s promotional event. Both menswear and womenswear saw double digit growth while sales of women’s accessories were up 11.4%. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure sales performed particularly strongly with rise of 22%.

Electricals and home technology sales climbed by 8.2%. The vision category performed well with a 20.4% uplift. Communication technology saw growth of 20.9% as sales were boosted by the popularity of Apple and Windows products.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 2.3% although barbeque sales were up 11% as customers made the most of the warmer weather.
