DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 5.7% last week

John Lewis grew its sales by 5.7% last week as sales in all departments grew faster than in the same week last year.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 8.2% as parents preparing for children going back to school and university helped drive a 13% increase in sales of technology items such as computers and iPads.

Fashion sales rose by 7.3% as summer products were marked down and cooler weather boosted demand for autumn clothing. Womenswear and menswear sales were up 14.3% and 5% respectively.

Meanwhile, home sales climbed by 3% as the weather led to an uplift in sales of bedding and lighting items. There was also an increase in furniture and flooring sales.
