John Lewis sales up 4.8% last week

Total sales rose by 4.8% year-on-year last week at the John Lewis & Partners department store after customers responded well to the start of a 20% off promotion for homewares and furniture.

The promotion helped home sales climb by 16.8% due to strong performances in the furniture, furniture accessories, cookshop, lighting, and gifts and candles categories.

In contrast, fashion sales were down 4.2%, although sales in the women’s accessories category edged up 0.3% after the retailer had its biggest week for umbrella sales in four years due to the week’s wet weather.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 4.5% driven by a combination of Apple product sales and strong sales of televisions.
