John Lewis sales up 4.2% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain last week rose by 4.2% on the same week last year as the retailer benefited from price matching a competitor’s promotions through its Never Knowingly Undersold policy.

Electrical and home technology sales climbed by 12.1% following strong sales of seasonal electrical items such as lawnmowers and air purifiers. Televisions were also popular as customers began preparing for the World Cup.

Fashion sales rose by 2.8% as price matching a competitor’s promotion helped drive sales of beauty products up 13% and women’s accessories up 8%. Own-brand womenswear had a strong week with sales rising by 4.8%.

Although home sales were down 1.1% overall, sales of Father’s Day gifts increased while gin sales were up 15% on the previous week due to a World Gin Day campaign. Outdoor living furniture also put in a good performance while sales of furniture and flooring products were up 2.6% year-on-year.
