John Lewis sales up 3.8% last week
John Lewis & Partners grew its sales by 3.8% last week compared to the same period last year.
Fashion sales climbed by 7.6% after the women’s accessories category performed particularly well. Sales in the department store’s own brand clothing category were up 7.1%, due in part to the popularity of the KIN brand. Price matching competitors through its Never Knowingly Undersold promise helped the retailer to grow its beauty sales by 26%.
Home sales rose by 4% as sales in the bedroom and bathroom category increased by 5%. Sales within the gift, cook and dine category edged up 3.2% as trade was driven by strong gift sales due to customers shopping for Father’s Day.
Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales were down 1.3% but sales of headphones climbed by 54% following a new product launch.
Last week was the retailer’s biggest ever Father’s Day week after trade was boosted by a 24% increase in sales of gift cards.
