DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 3.4% last week

Sales at John Lewis rose by 3.4% year-on-year last week as shoppers bought products for the bank holiday weekend and took advantage of the department store chain’s promotions and price matching initiatives.

Electrical and home technology sales increased by 5.6% after promotions in the communications technology category helped boost trade. Sales of electrical products were also up due to strong demand for vacuum cleaners and televisions.

Looking at fashion, sales were up 3.4% as womenswear accessories had a particularly good week with sales rising by 12.2%. Sales in the own brand womenswear category edged up 2.2% while menswear sales performed well with an uplift of 9.9%.

Meanwhile, home sales crept up 0.9% after being boosted by buoyant trade in the gifts, cook and dine category. The retailer’s summer Poolside collection was particularly popular with sales rising by 40%. In addition, outdoor furniture sales were up 14% compared to the corresponding week last year.
