John Lewis sales up 2.8% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 2.8% year-on-year last week as the retailer enjoyed strong fashion sales.

Sales in the area grew by 7.7% on the corresponding week last year, with both menswear and womenswear seeing an uplift. This was largely driven by matching a competitor promotion, which John Lewis price matched under its Never Knowingly Undersold policy. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure also saw a rise in sales with growth of 6.6% compared with last year.

Electrical and home technology sales rose by 4.5% as communication technology had another strong week driven by mobile and photo. Sales for the category increased by 17.1%. Large electricals also performed well with sales rising by 4.9%.

Home sales were down 3.4% as trade was impacted by the the later fall of Mother’s Day this year. However, furniture sales saw an increase of 6.6% with trade boosted by strong sales in the beds and fitted furniture category.
