John Lewis sales up 14.8% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store were up 14.8% year-on-year last week after the retailer achieved a strong end to its Black Friday campaign.

Fashion sales increased by 12.5% as customers shopped for womenswear and accessories for the party season. The menswear category also performed well with an 11.6% uplift in sales.

Home sales were down 2.3% in the week, although furniture and flooring sales rose by 6.9%. Sales of cookware were also strong, increasing by 43% due to Black Friday promotions.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales climbed by 34.8%. One of the best performing categories was communications technology where sales were up 36.4% due to strong tablet sales.  Sales in the large electricals category increased by 18% as customers bought new fridges in preparation for Christmas.

Total sales for the department store’s full 11 day Black Friday event were up 10.2% year-on-year. Sales for Cyber Sunday and Monday rose by 10.9% on the equivalent trading days last year.
