John Lewis sales up 11.6% last week

The John Lewis department store chain increased its sales by 11.6% year-on-year last week as the retailer benefited from a boost in trading due to Mother’s Day falling two weeks earlier compared to last year.

Fashion sales rose by 17.9% as womenswear sales grew by 17.7%. Some of the strongest performing categories included own-brand fashion and cashmere. The beauty category also had a good week, with fragrance achieving an uplift of 62%.

Home sales increased by 3.9% with gifting, cook and dine sales rising by 35.2% as customers purchased items ahead of Mother’s Day. Stationery also saw double digit growth while sales of decorative accessories were up 10%.

There was a 13.3% uplift in sales of electricals and home technology items. Small electricals, including coffee machines and food prep, had a good week driven by strong Mother’s Day sales. Vision also performed well, with TVs, stands and mounts, and soundbars all up on last year.

Johnathan Marsh, buying director for electricals and home technology at John Lewis, said: “Looking ahead, this week we have some exciting new technology launches with the next generation Dyson V10 cordless vacuum cleaner and the Samsung S9 mobile phone going on sale.”
