John Lewis sales up 11.4% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its sales climb by 11.4% year-on-year last week.

The retailer said it increased sales across all of its categories after it benefited from the week’s warmer weather and price matching initiatives under its Never Knowingly Undersold promise.

Fashion sales were up 23.3% after new season clothing sales climbed by 17% due to customers buying items for their spring wardrobes. A price matching exercise helped beauty sales to rise by 37.8%.

Home sales were up 5.2% in the week. Mother’s Day gifting sales rose by 22% while bath shop product sales grew by 15.9% on the same week last year. Meanwhile, sales in the furniture category were up 12%.

Electrical and home technology sales saw a 5% uplift after the wearable technology category performed particularly well with an increase of 10%. Headphones sales were also strong and rose by 39% on the corresponding week last year.
