John Lewis sales up 1.6% last week

Sales at John Lewis rose by 1.6% year-on-year last week as trade was still impacted by the later fall of Easter this year. The majority of John Lewis shops were shut on Easter Sunday which fell into the week’s trading.

Fashion sales were down 0.4% although sales of women’s casualwear continued to rise. Swimwear and nightwear also had a good week with sales up 16.9%. Meanwhile, childrenswear sales were boosted by a 31.5% increase in sales of children’s shoes as parents prepared for the return to school after the Easter break.

Home sales were down 5%, impacted by one day’s less trade. Trading in the gift food and seasonal products category remained strong with sales up 7.1%. Stationery sales rose by 5.2%.

Electricals and home technology sales climbed by 11.7%, largely driven by promotions over the Easter period. The vision category, including TVs, had a particularly good week with sales up 14.3%. Sales in the mobile and photography climbed by 57.9% as new launches helped drive sales.
