DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 1.3% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store were up 1.3% last week compared to the same period in 2018.

The retailer benefited from its ongoing clearnce sale and a strong week in its shops despite the busy weekend of sport.

Fashion sales climbed by 7.2% as the retailer’s own brand categories performed particularly well.

In contrast, electrical and home technology sales were down 2.3% as cooler weather compared to the same week last year affected sales of fridges and fans. However, the android and smart home category had a good week with sales rising by 19%.

Home sales edged down 0.7% in the week, although textiles and home accessory sales rose by 8.1%. The gift food category also performed well with an uplift of 8.7%. The retailer’s own brand Find, Keep, Give collection continued to drive sales in the gifts category.
