John Lewis sales up 1.1% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain rose by 1.1% year-on-year last week as customers bought fashion items in anticipation of warmer weather.

Sales in the category were up 4.9% with womenswear and menswear sales climbing by 7% and 6.3% respectively. Beauty, wellbeing and leisure also performed well with sales up 14.2% due to the price matching of a competitor’s promotional event.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 0.8% as trade was boosted by a 5.8% uplift in sales of communications technology products. The latter was driven by demand for the new Samsung S8, Apple Watches and the FitBit Alta.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 2.2% year-on-year, but the retailer said there was an increase in customers placing deposits for future orders.
