John Lewis sales up 0.4% last week

John Lewis & Partners saw its total sales edge up 0.4% year-on-year last week as the department store benefited from customers buying back to school items and technology.

Looking at the retailer’s main departments, electrical and home technology sales increased by 4.7%, after trade was driven by buoyant sales of hair care products. It was also a good week for the televisions and large electricals categories where sales were up 21% and 12.4% respectively.

Fashion sales were down 1.2% overall, but the menswear category performed well with an uplift of 7.1%. Sales of women’s accessories were also strong, rising by 3.1%.

Meanwhile, home sales dropped by 2.7% although the textiles and home accessories category put in a good performance with sales up 2.5% on the same week last year.
