John Lewis sales down 5.6% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its sales decline by 5.6% year-on-year last week.

Fashion sales dropped by 5% due to the annualising of strong price match promotions in the same week last year. However, sales of warm weather items climbed by 15% as the retailer enjoyed a record week for sales of sandals.

Home sales were down 4.8% despite the warmer weather resulting in strong barbecue sales and a record week for outdoor living with sales up 54%.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales fell by 6.8%, although there was a 2.3% uplift in small electrical sales due to a significant increase in fan sales.
