John Lewis sales down 5.5% last week

Sales at the John Lewis & Partners department store chain were down 5.5% year-on-year last week.

Fashion sales declined by 4.4% despite respective uplifts of 42% and 27% in the sunglasses and swimwear categories as customers prepared for the bank holiday heatwave.

Home sales fell by 7% in the week although sales in the hydration category were up 20% due to the popularity of reusable water bottles.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales were down 5.3%. However, sales in the environmental care category surged by 132% as the hot weather drove strong demand for fans and air conditioning units.
