John Lewis sales down 4.7% last week

John Lewis has reported that sales declined by 4.7% year-on-year to £98.5 million in the week to 6 January.

Sales at the beginning of the week were impacted by the New Year’s Day bank holiday falling on a Monday compared to Sunday in the previous year.

Fashion sales dropped by 3% while home sales were down 5.3% despite furniture and flooring sales rising by 1.5% on last year.

Electricals and home technology sales were down 5.2% although the retailer said it achieved strong sales in the audio, connected home and small electricals categories.

This week the retailer is introducing its exclusive range of athleisure clothing designed in collaboration with wellbeing brand ‘Patternity’.
