DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales down 4.1% last week

The John Lewis department store chain has experienced a slower than usual start to its winter clearance sale despite a busy few days in the run-up to Christmas.

Sales last week fell by 4.1% year-on-year.

Fashion sales rose by 5.8% after the retailer benefited from strong trading in the jewellery and women’s nightwear categories where sales increased by 27% and 22% respectively.

In contrast, electrical and home technology sales were down 14.5% due to slower demand for clearance sale items.

Meanwhile, home sales declined by 5.3% despite a last minute surge in the number of customers shopping for Christmas gifts in the stationery and gift food categories.
