John Lewis sales down 3.5% last week

John Lewis & Partners saw its sales drop by 3.5% year-on-year last week.

Fashion sales rose by 5% as customers bought clothing for the cold weather. There was strong demand for the department store’s own brand clothing ranges with the standout performer being Modern Rarity where sales were up 52%. Womenswear accessories also performed well with sales rising by 14.1% on the corresponding week last year.

Home sales declined by 7.2% although estimator appointments for window products and flooring were up 9% and 6% respectively.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales were down 7.6% in the week due to the retailer annualising strong sales from its clearance sale last year.
