John Lewis sales down 3.1% last week

Sales at John Lewis fell by 3.1% year-on-year last week.

The department store said the decline was mainly due to the fact that in the same week last year it was price matching a competitor’s promotion.

Electricals and home technology sales were up 2.5% driven by the audio and connected home categories as well as mobile phones.

Fashion sales declined by 7.8% as the area did not benefit from a price matching promotion this year. The retailer said this particularly impacted branded fashion although its own brand designer collaborations, including Somerset by Alice Temperley and Bruce by Bruce Oldfield, were up on the year.

Home sales were down 4.2% as trade was also affected by last year’s price matching promotion in some categories. However, there were strong sales increases in many categories including beds and bedroom furniture, bed linen, duvets and pillows, and lighting.
