John Lewis sales down 11.9% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its total sales decline by 11.9% year-on-year last week due to trade being more subdued following the Black Friday period.

Fashion sales fell by 13.3% although sales of cashmere items rose by 6% due to the colder weather.

Electrical and home technology sales also dropped, declining by 14.7%. However, sales in the small electricals category increased by 7% after trade was boosted by a strong performance in the personal care category.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 6.3% despite respective uplifts of 17% and 53% in the bedroom products and furniture categories. In addition, experience sales surged by 173% as customers  shopped for personalised Kit Kats and Fever Tree crackers ahead of Christmas.
