DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales down 0.9% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain were down 0.9% year-on-year last week to £89.1 million.

The week’s warmer impacted fashion sales, which were down 2.7%. However, the retailer’s own brand Kin range had a record week with sales up 55% compared to last year.

Home sales declined by 2.5% despite a strong performance from John Lewis’s Christmas Villages in the shops and a 30% uplift in sales of Halloween items.

Meanwhile, electricals and home technology sales increased by 2.4%, driven by buoyant sales in the communication technology category. Apple products, including Macbooks and iPhones 8 and 6, performed well as did Sony and Panasonic TVs.
