Debenhams to close 19 stores this month
Department store Debenhams is to shut down 19 UK stores this month as part of its previously announced plans to close 50 of its worst performing shops.
The move will result in the loss of 660 jobs.
Debenhams closed three stores at the end of last year in Haverfordwest, Orpington and York. The 19 stores in this round of closures will be shuttered by the end of January.
A further round of 28 closures is understood to be planned for 2021.
Stefaan Vansteenkiste, Debenhams chief executive, said: “We are working hard to implement the transformation of Debenhams. Despite a challenging retail environment, thanks to our colleagues’ hard work and our investor group’s commitment we are progressing with our turnaround.”
Debenhams entered administration in April last year as it looked to reduce its debt.
